Pat is a member of the CIAR research council, and the population health program,a multi-disciplinary group whose work has been influential in shaping how health and its determinants are viewed by policy makers and analysts in Canada. Pat became vice-president of the CIAR in February of 1991. Her background in medical genetics, ethics, and science and technology led her to being appointed by the Prime Minister to chair the Royal Commission on the New Reproductive Technologies in 1989, which reported at the end of 1993.
