David Crane is a graduate of Victoria University at the University of Toronto. He has pursued a life-long career in journalism and became a member of the staff of The Toronto Star. He has been political editor, editorial page editor, and business editor. Currently, he is the Economics Editor.

In his journalistic career, David Crane has been a strong supporter of the importance of education, and an advocate of the importance of research and innovation as sources of economic growth. He has also been a strong voice for early childhood development and its influence on the future health and its influence on the future health and competence of individuals and populations. He has promoted the Canadian cultural identity and has supported ideas such as a Third Way which balances free market capitalism with social equity.

Author of four books, he has been praised for his clarity and understanding of the economy. Most recently, in 1992, he published "The Next Canadian Century: Building a Competitive Economy", which stirred responses reflecting different ideologies.

David Crane has received a number of awards and honorary degrees recognizing his contribution to our understanding of our changing economy and the nature of science and technology revolution.
